The Landscape Architect’s Guide to

Washington, D.C.

Dupont Circle

Intersection of New Hampshire Ave., Connecticut Ave, Massachusetts Ave, 19th St., and P St. NW, Washington, D.C.

As one of the original traffic circles designated in the L’Enfant Plan for Washington, DC, Dupont Circle anchors both social and commercial life where Downtown Washington gives way to a more residential scale. Even though it is encircled by four lanes of vehicular traffic, locals and visitors alike gravitate to the circle and its iconic fountain to meet friends, eat lunch, or simply to sit and observe the swirl of activity on view. The design elements of the site are limited but work together to frame distinct spaces within the Circle.
